Meta Platforms has made a number of changes that might fundamentally alter its influence and reach. Photo: Stephen Lam/REUTERSMeta Platforms will let political ads on Facebook and Instagram question the legitimacy of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, one of several changes the social-media company and other platforms have made to loosen constraints on campaign advertising for 2024. Meta made the change last year, but it hasn’t gained wide attention. The company decided to allow political advertisers to say past elections were “rigged” or “stolen” but prevented them from questioning the legitimacy of ongoing and coming elections.

The agreement with Tencent Holdings will make the world’s largest videogame company the exclusive seller of Meta’s headsets in China, people familiar with the matter said, offering the U.S. technology giant a major new market as it looks to boost tepid global demand for its niche gear. Tencent will start selling the headset beginning late 2024, with the two companies reaching a deal after about a year of negotiations.

Isaiah Samad was looking for an alternative to Twitter earlier this year, growing tired of the “hot takes” and “rage bait” that he felt had grown too common on the site. After signing up for Meta Platforms’ Threads when it launched in July, he noted a more welcoming, positive atmosphere on the app and eventually deactivated his account on X, previously known as Twitter.

The unit that makes Meta’s virtual-reality headsets has been posting operating losses. Photo: Jeff Chiu/Associated PressFacebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. is expected to post its fourth straight quarter of declining sales as it struggles with weak advertiser demand and increasing privacy headwinds. Meta is expected to report first-quarter revenue of nearly $27.7 billion, according to analysts surveyed by FactSet. That would be down 0.7% compared with a year earlier. Meta has never reported four consecutive quarters of declining sales since going public in 2012.
